What is a CMS?
If you are unsure as to what a CMS does for your website, here is a quick quote from the CMS page on Wikipedia:
A content management system (CMS) is the collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment. These procedures can be manual or computer-based. The pro cedures are designed to do the following:
- Allow for a large number of people to contribute to and share stored data
- Control access to data, based on user roles (defining which information users or user groups can view, edit, publish, etc.)
- Aid in easy storage and retrieval of data
- Reduce repetitive duplicate input
- Improve the ease of report writing
- Improve communication between users
In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything: documents, movies, pictures, phone numbers, scientific data, and so forth. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, revising, semantically enriching, and publishing documentation. Serving as a central repository, the CMS increases the version level of new updates to an already existing file. Version control is one of the primary advantages of a CMS.
Our recommended CMS technology
Many web development companies will try to sell you their own CMS solution ... but this is often the wrong decision for you too make. Content Management Systems are pretty much a solved problem. There are hundreds of them out there, and their is no reason to lock yourself into one that has minimal ongoing development and not much future improvement, which is the case for most offered by small development houses.
We highly recommend the use of Open Source technologies, and in our opinion, the best Open Source Content Management Systems is Drupal, which is a completely free, open source content management system that many intelligent companies are using today to provide for their needs. Drupal's many features and add-ons allow it to be used for a variety of website needs; perhaps for marketing, internal communications, informational websites, or for social networking purposes. If a needed feature is not currently available, it has a proven community of developers who can be paid to do the work for you. Drupal's access control system means that it can be easily applied to your organizational structure. Overall, Drupal is a good choice for today's companies of any size because it is free, easy, and incredibly flexible.
Drupal has been used by many large companies and government websites, such as the NikeMedia website and the American Governments website for The Whitehouse.
